My demons gather in the corner, whispering
As I paste a smile on my face
And hold my head high and approach this world
With what appears to be poise and grace
My demons crouch in the corner, snickering
As I spread my love and light
Because they know what you do not -that they have won the fight
My demons sit in the corner, laughing
As I tell my inspiring tale
Of how I overcame them again and again
Yet they know that they have prevailed
My demons rise from the corner, clapping
With smirks upon their faces
Because they know that they hold me hostage
They think they’ve covered all of their bases
My demons surround me now, cackling
For we both know the deal
I pretend to be the one driving this car
But they are the ones behind the wheel
I retreat to the corner, thinking
Now that all others have gone
My demons feed me anxiety like it’s a feast
And I am their unwitting pawn
I kneel in the corner, sickened
Their taunting grins drive me insane
They lick every last lingering drop
from their lips
Sharp teeth gleaming as they make a meal of my pain
I crouch in the corner, crying
While they condescendingly pat my head
I shed countless tears and submit to my fears
Knowing I’ve kept them well fed
I am caged in the corner, raging
At all that they’ve taken from me
As they dance all around me mocking
My attempts to grasp for the key
I sit in the corner, begging
They turn their backs and are now walking away
Granting me a reprieve though I know it won’t last
For my demons never obey
I rise from the corner, eyes blazing
They don’t take any heed at all
For they’ve heard me repeat again and again
That someday I ‘ll win and they will fall
I move from the corner, smiling
For they think that I do not know
That Demons are impossible to vanquish
They are immortal foes
My demons celebrate their victory, clueless
That by subtle degrees I’ve been exerting my will
So that every day they have a little less sway
As I feign weakness when they go in for the kill
My demons surround me now, oblivious
To the fact that I’ve been weakening them in stages
And will do so until I’ve rendered them powerless
And THEY will inhabit MY cages
My demons gather in the corner, whispering…
